Good evening all and welcome to the first of the final 3 episodes
ever of JAG.
I'm still holding out hope for a good finish. I did read a
columnist this week who said that the finale would contain some sort
of coin toss to determine their fate. Well that I find hard to
imagine. A coin toss yes for something more trivial maybe, but not
for the ultimate relationship question--that of love. Plus I've read
a lot of what this guy writes and he tends to go for cute more than
total accuracy. Regardless, I've read other things like finally face
their feelings. I know I read a snatch of dialogue from a script
version that was from their going away party that said 'here's to
leaving nothing unsaid'. Amen to that.
Then there was this spoiler provided by CBS:
Friday, April 29 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT)
JAG -- Mac (Catherine Bell) and Harm (David James Elliott) have just
72 hours to resolve their personal and professional lives before they
depart for their new duty station, in San Diego and London
respectively. Harm asks Bud to join him while Mac makes it plain that
she won't be asking the hot-headed Vukovic (Chris Beetem) to go with
her. At their going away party, Harm and Mac finally come up with a
plan regarding their relationship with surprising results (Series
Finale).
Now on to tonight's episode, which was intended I would think to have
been a preview of next year's JAG stories with Vic and Catherine
Graves working together but we won't get to see that. And that
saddens me because I like Vic and I like her and I think there was a
lot of potential for good drama there.
Anyway, open with:
Laos, 1969 and a fire fight--the Vietnam war. Chopper assault and
crash. Large explosion and scene switches to Cresswell in bed and
the phone ringing. His brother calling.
Mac and Bud talking to a Lt. who treated an Iraqi child with
medication in short supply as I understand it. They're defense.
General Cresswell is sending Vic to check with his brother about
remains found. GC tells him to take 5 days and relax some while he's
gone.
Harm asks Mac for lunch but she declines--she and Bud have ordered
in. Mac asks how Mattie is--no change. Mac once again offers to
help. Harm changes the subject to Lt. Chang. She gave a life saving
drug to a child that was better earmarked for the US troops
apparently.
Mac is clearly worried about Harm, who looks tired and depressed. It
was nice that he asked her if she wanted to grab lunch. He probably
wanted to talk, but they're hip-deep in the case and Bud brings in
the food. He doesn't want to join them.
Lt. Graves picks up Vic. They're in Civvies to better blend with the
locals. No real need to go into this case, but I will say that these
two would have made a good JAG next season. He's asking her to go
hear some Jazz. I'm truly sorry we're not going to be able to see
it. We should have had a good ending to the saga of Mac-Harm and
then a revamped JAG with these two. But that's just me of course.
They were driving to New Orleans over her objection--she wanted to
check a lead in Vicksburg, but when he falls asleep she detours
heading for there. They wake up and he calls her Lt. Fortune
Cookie. Cute.
Back to JAG and the Art. 32 hearing. It's white uniform time by the
way. Lt. Chang administered the drug in question despite her
Captain's order not to use it and the unit did run out.
Jen and Mac talk, and Mac asks her to try to help Harm because he's
not having anything to do with help from her.
Awwwww......Vic and Cath are stuck in the same room. Right out of
fanfic. This is just cute. Very very cute and I'm sorry we're not
going to have it. Which I know is a totally minority opinion so no
need to tell me you disagree. It doesn't even matter any more--it's
a dead issue. Anyway, she's under the covers with him on top but
it's just a sweet connecting scene.
Next morning--Cath is all cheerful and up and ready to go. Vic,
wearing a tank top that shows off his well developed muscles by the
way, is dubious.
Another trial scene, and Lt. Chang talks of the little girl dying,
which is getting to Harm as he thinks of Mattie. Then he takes the
offensive as he cross examines sternly, much to Mac's distress and
irritation.
Scene switch to a jazz club, with Gladys Knight singing and Vic and
Cath watching. Sorry, I'm not a fan of this kind of music. Blues,
Jazz or whatever it's called. Where is Garth Brooks when you need
him.
Bud and Mac talk case and Bud gets the idea to check the supply of
the drug in question that was on hand before the girl was given it.
He pulls the requisition forms. There was an error in ordering that
created the severe shortage.
Lt. Chang tells Mac she's not interested in the deal Harm offers.
She does not want to be removed from the Navy.
Cath and Vic find the man they're looking for and the scene from 1969
is relived. Turns out it was a mercy killing so the victim would not
burn to death trapped in the chopper crash--at his request. Now they
need DNA from this man to properly ID the remains that were found.
He agrees but requests not to be told the outcome. It's easier to
live with the knowledge that his brother is only MIA, not dead.
And it ends there, without returning to Harm-Mac.
REACTION: Decent enough story on both plotlines. But very little
time was given over to Harm-Mac, which of course was as planned since
this was meant to showcase how S11 JAG would play out.
PREVIEWS: OMG. OK they show a mish-mash of past scenes, talk about
10 years and 225 missions, then it goes--ends with big surprises.
Then there's a blurry picture of Mac-Harm kissing. Now when I get
excited over this sort of thing, someone usually points out it was
from an old episode which both DB and CBS are prone to do. Or that
it's a dream. Whatever. So I'm leaving it out there. It's real to
me until it's proven otherwise. And I'll sleep happy tonight. See
you next week. I like how they're tying the final two together.
